FROM A FORGOTTEN CROP TO GLOBAL SUPERFOOD

There was a time when only people of Northern Bihar knew what makhana is,
and how diverse the quality of makhana is, when there is arise of another food
like leafy greens, beans, berries, nuts, quinoa, chia seeds, Muesli, and salmon
arose. At that time, makhana had been on the list of forgotten crops despite its
uniqueness is untold. Mallah has harvested spiky black seeds of the makhana
plant from the muddy waters of Mithilanchal and Kosi regions. What was, at the
time, it was just seasonal employment, and livelihood has now become the
backbone of the global health trend.
When makhana attracted the eye of the government and the people who want
to discover a healthy substitute for unhealthy snacks, which cause lots of
problems, they were overwhelmed to know that makhana is low in calories, high
in fiber, and rich in antioxidants to making considered a superfood.
